Road and roof charging, not splash-proof

  • What it is: a 12 V house-battery charger fed by the alternator and by solar through its own MPPT controller
  • The trade-off: both sources and Bluetooth in one box, but an IP32 case, fixed alternator start points and a prorated 2-year term
  • Conflict: the product page says 800 W of recommended solar; the manual and spec sheet say 700 W
  • Look elsewhere for: a 24 V house battery, a sealed case or galvanic isolation

Strengths

  • Charges from solar and alternator together
  • Bluetooth monitoring built in
  • Smart-alternator mode
  • Solar can top up the starter battery
  • RV-C CAN and RS485 ports
  • Low idle draw

Drawbacks

  • Not sealed against water
  • Fixed alternator start points
  • Prorated warranty
  • House battery side is 12 V only
  • Product page overstates recommended solar
  • No galvanic isolation

Rich Solar is the brand of Rich Solar Inc., which says it began in 2005 and keeps its offices and warehouse in Ontario, California.

It sells with a cart at richsolar.com, through a RICH SOLAR Amazon brand store run by the seller SUNRICH ENERGY, on Walmart, and through dealers such as Outbound Power.

The Rich Solar BRAVO 50 DC (RS-MPPT50DC) is a 12 V house-battery charger that takes power from a 12 V or 24 V vehicle alternator and from solar panels through a built-in MPPT controller, together or separately.

It charges at a rated 50 A, with a 55 V maximum solar input, a 17 to 36 V MPPT range, up to 50 A of solar current and 700 W of recommended solar by the manual and spec sheet; the product page says 800 W.

The alternator side takes up to 65 A, at 13.2 to 16 V from a conventional alternator or 12 to 16 V from a smart (Euro 6) alternator, and 26.4 to 32 V or 24 to 32 V on a 24 V vehicle.

With the ignition wire fitted it starts charging from a smart alternator at 12.0 V, against 13.2 V for a conventional one, and a setting chooses solar or alternator priority.

Rich Solar rates conversion efficiency at 96 percent (the manual's feature list says up to 98), MPPT tracking above 99 percent and no-load loss under 1.1 W. Profiles cover sealed, gel, flooded, lithium iron phosphate and user-set batteries, and solar can also charge the starter battery at up to 10 A.

It has built-in Bluetooth for the Rich Solar app, TTL, RS485 and CAN (RV-C) ports, a backlit LCD, a remote on/off input, a voltage-sense input and a battery temperature port.

It measures 8.7 x 6.9 x 3.6 in (221 x 175.8 x 92.4 mm), weighs 5.16 lb, is rated IP32 and runs from -31 to 149 °F; terminals take up to 6 AWG on solar and battery and 4 AWG on the alternator.
