Rides out small shadows, drops to zero at half

The RSP200DC-ASR is Renogy's 200 W ShadowFlux rigid panel, a 52-cell N-type glass module built to keep producing when part of it is shaded.

Verdict

It suits a roof where vents, rigging or branches shade a few cells at a time, not a site where half the panel sits in shade.

Strengths

  • 28 bypass diodes across 52 cellscounted by CleverSolarPower
  • IP67 junction box and IP68 MC4 connectors
  • Temperature coefficient of Pmax -0.29 percent per degree C
  • Output warranted at 95 percent for 5 years90 percent for 10 and 80 percent for 25
  • Measured at 210 W in full sun by Hobotecha channel selling it under a discount code
  • 23.8 lb at 49.69 x 30.08 in

Drawbacks

  • Output fell to 0 W with half the panel shaded in CleverSolarPower's test
  • 36.5 V open-circuit voltage needs an MPPT controllera 30 V-input controller will not take it
  • 5-year materials and workmanship coveragainst 10 years on Renogy's standard N-type rigid panels
  • No UL 61730 claimthe datasheet lists CE, UKCA and RCM only

  • 25 percent efficiency is a cell figure; module level works out to 20.7 percent, per one member

A DIY Solar Power Forum thread on the 52-cell 200 W panel is mostly prospective buyers rather than owners. One member works Renogy's 25 percent cell claim down to 20.7 percent at module level from the panel's 0.964 square meters. Members cite tester videos both ways, one showing about a 10 percent drop with a corner shaded and another described as questionable.

Every tester of the 200 W panel carries a tie: CleverSolarPower earns through Amazon affiliate links, Hobotech sells it under a discount code, and a third video is marked as paid promotion. Hobotech measured 210 W in full sun and 60 W with half the panel shaded. CleverSolarPower measured 138 W with four cells shaded and 0 W with half the panel shaded, and judges a half-cut panel better once more than about 20 cells are shaded.
