Usability
The U8500 is for the buyer who wants WaterChef's certified filtration but not its electronics, or who already owns a drinking faucet worth keeping. Its strongest attribute is that the certification is identical to the U9000's, covering the same four NSF/ANSI standards through the same IAPMO listing, so nothing is given up on performance. Its weakest is cartridge economy: 600 gallons against 1,000 for a cartridge that costs only a few dollars less, which pushes the cost per gallon up by roughly half. Flow is the same modest 0.75 gallons per minute, and the same dissolved-solids limits apply. The buyer is trading the usage monitor and 400 gallons of capacity for about $67, or $144 if the housing-only configuration suits. That is a reasonable saving on a system that is otherwise the same hardware.

The WaterChef U8500 is the non-electronic version of the company's under-sink carbon block system, rated for 600 gallons per UR85 cartridge instead of 1,000. It shares the U9000's surgical stainless steel housing, John Guest fittings and 0.75 gallon per minute rated service flow, and carries the same IAPMO R&T certification to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 and 372. There is no Intelligent Monitor, so cartridge changes are tracked by the calendar. It is sold either with a WaterChef designer faucet or as a housing-only unit for use with an existing drinking faucet.
