Usability
If fluoride or arsenic is the reason you bought a Berkey, you need these, because the primary elements do not address either. Everything else about them is a downgrade: a sixth of the filter life, a fifth of the flow, and an independent lab test that found the activated alumina media putting aluminum back into the water at seven times the EPA limit. Fit them if your water report justifies it, not by default.

The PF-2 is an add-on element, not a filter in its own right. It screws onto the stem of a Black Berkey or Phoenix element and hangs in the lower chamber, adding fluoride and arsenic reduction that the primary elements do not provide.
The media is activated aluminum oxide in a BPA-free polypropylene #5 shell, rated to 1,000 gallons per set or roughly twelve months, whichever comes first. The manufacturer publishes 99.75% fluoride reduction and warrants the set for six months. It works best on water in the pH 5.0 to 7.0 range.
Fitting PF-2s slows the system by 15 to 20%, and the number you can install is capped by your system size - two in a Travel Berkey, four in a Big or Royal, six in an Imperial, eight in a Crown.
