The Only Berkey Element You Can Actually Buy
Expert Score

Phoenix exists because Black Berkey production is halted, and on the numbers it is the better purchase anyway: 46 dollars cheaper for 92% of the rated capacity, in stock, and carrying real certifications. Read those certifications carefully though - NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine and taste, and 372 governs how much lead is in the product's own materials. Neither is a health-effects reduction standard.

PROS
  • Only Berkey-branded element currently in production and in stock
  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, which no Black Berkey element has ever held
  • 46 dollars cheaper per pair than Black Berkey elements
  • Direct drop-in for every Berkey system with no hardware change
  • Compatible with the same PF-2 fluoride and arsenic attachments
  • Published reductions above 99.9% for VOCs and pesticides from ISO 17025 accredited labs
CONS
  • 5,500 gallons per pair against Black Berkey's 6,000
  • NSF/ANSI 42 is an aesthetic-effects standard and 372 is a lead-content standard for materials - neither certifies health-effects contaminant reduction
  • The seller's own page describes 372 as verifying lead reduction, which is not what that standard covers
  • Too new to have any long-term field record on flow degradation or clogging
  • Warranty terms are not stated on the product page
  • Still requires priming before first use, same as Black Berkey

The Berkey Phoenix New Millennium Edition is NMCL's current-production filter element and a direct drop-in for any Berkey system, using an advanced carbon block and nanofiber composite media rather than the Black Berkey blend.

A pair is rated to 5,500 gallons and the elements are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, which is the first time any Berkey-branded element has held a certification rather than relying purely on commissioned lab testing. Reduction figures published from NABL and ISO 17025 accredited labs include greater than 99.9% for VOCs and pesticides and greater than 99.5% for pharmaceuticals.

Phoenix elements accept the same PF-2 fluoride and arsenic attachments as the Black Berkeys and, like them, are designed to leave calcium and magnesium in the water.

Excludes the seller's own on-page 4.9/5 widget. No Amazon pool is recorded: Amazon is not an authorized Berkey seller and its listings are third-party. No retailer pool is recorded either - Phoenix launched too recently to have accumulated ratings at Walmart or elsewhere.

Reddit Score6.0

Brand-level. r/Berkey and r/preppers threads are dominated by flow problems rather than water quality - elements slowing after a few months, incomplete primes, and upper chambers draining only halfway. The recurring fix is scrubbing and re-priming. Phoenix is too new to have generated its own thread history.

Google Score7.0

Brand-level. Independent coverage of the Berkey range notes that the Phoenix elements introduced in 2025 and 2026 are the first Berkey-branded filters to carry NSF certification at all, which reviewers treat as the meaningful change in the line rather than any shift in filtration media performance.

YouTube Score6.0

Brand-level. A widely viewed Water Filter Guru lab-test video found aluminum at 1.44 ppm in filtered city water, above the EPA's 0.2 ppm limit, and attributed it to the activated alumina media in the optional PF-2 add-on rather than the Berkey elements themselves. Recurring criticism across the line is that priming is fiddly and flow slows without periodic cleaning.
