Usability
There is no way to review this product honestly in 2026 without leading with availability: production is halted, dealer stock is gone, and the litigation that would change that is unresolved. On the merits the Black Berkey remains the longest-lived gravity element on the market at 6,000 gallons per pair. On the practicalities, the Phoenix does 92% of that for 46 dollars less and is actually in stock.
- 6,000 gallons per pair, the longest rated life of any gravity filter element
- Tested by independent EPA-accredited and NSF-accredited laboratories against 200+ contaminants
- Published reductions above 99.9% for PFAS, heavy metals and pharmaceuticals
- Leaves calcium and magnesium in the water
- At roughly 8 years of use at 2 gallons per day, cost per gallon is negligible
- Fits every Berkey system and accepts PF-2 attachments
- Out of production and out of stock at every authorized dealer under an EPA stop-sale order
- No NSF certification has ever been held for any filtration claim
- Cheap listings on third-party marketplaces are unlikely to be authentic given nothing new is being manufactured
- The Walmart marketplace listings priced at 26 to 135 dollars rate 3.4 to 3.9 out of 5, well below the systems, which is consistent with counterfeit supply
- Requires priming at a faucet, the most common first-use complaint across the brand
- Needs periodic scrubbing and re-priming or flow degrades
The Black Berkey element is the filter the brand was built on: a proprietary media blend rated to 3,000 gallons per element and 6,000 per pair, tested by third-party laboratories against more than 200 contaminants.
It is also, as of now, not being manufactured. The EPA issued a Stop Sale, Use or Removal Order against Berkey International's Puerto Rico facility over the classification of the elements as unregistered pesticide devices under FIFRA, on the grounds that the silver in the media acts as an antimicrobial. NMCL disputes the classification and the litigation is still live.
Pre-existing dealer inventory has been depleted, so this product is listed but unavailable. Cheap listings on third-party marketplaces should be treated with suspicion, since nothing new is being produced.
