Small alternator charger, low rated efficiency

  • What it is: a 12 V, 20 A alternator charger for a house battery, switched on by the D+ ignition signal
  • The trade-off: simple wiring and smart-alternator support, but a low rated efficiency and a 1-year warranty
  • Look elsewhere for: solar input, app monitoring or a 24 V house battery

Strengths

  • Works with smart and conventional alternators
  • Half-current mode for small alternators
  • Recovers over-discharged lithium batteries
  • Charges lead-acid and lithium chemistries
  • Charges only while the engine runs

Drawbacks

  • Low rated efficiency
  • Short warranty
  • No solar input
  • No Bluetooth or display
  • Ignition and current-limit cables sold separately

Rich Solar is the brand of Rich Solar Inc., which says it began in 2005 and keeps its offices and warehouse in Ontario, California.

It sells with a cart at richsolar.com, through a RICH SOLAR Amazon brand store run by the seller SUNRICH ENERGY, on Walmart, and through dealers such as Outbound Power.

The Rich Solar RS-DC20 is a 12 V to 12 V on-board charger that fills a house battery from a vehicle's starter battery and alternator at a rated 20 A (18 to 22 A operating range), which Rich Solar's manual rates at 250 W.

It runs from a 10 to 16 V input, draws 34 A or less, and switches on only with a 12 V signal on its D+ ignition terminal. An LC terminal halves the output to 10 A for small or older alternators, and a mode switch selects STD, GEL, AGM, LFP or a POWER supply mode.

Charging is 2-stage for lithium and 3-stage for lead-acid, with a lithium activation function for over-discharged packs. The manual rates efficiency above 85 percent at 14 V and 30 percent load, quiescent current under 0.45 A and ripple under 500 mV RMS.

It measures 8.4 x 7.4 x 3.1 in, weighs 4.0 lb, has cooling fans and a red fault LED, mounts with four screws and shares a common negative between input and output. An RJ11 port takes an optional temperature sensor for lead-acid compensation; the D+ and LC cables and the sensor are not included.

Rich Solar lists CE and RoHS. The 20 A, 40 A and 60 A models share one manual and spec sheet.
