Its 40 A rated charge current sits on the 40 to 49 A rung, so it scores 6 on capacity.

Renogy rates its peak conversion efficiency at 98 percent, so it scores 8 on efficiency.

Its PV input accepts up to 100 V open-circuit, the typical 100 to 149 V rung, so it scores 5 on operating range.

Bluetooth comes only through the add-on BT-2 module, for half points, and it has a user-set lithium profile, an included battery temperature sensor and a load output but no synced parallel operation, four of seven points, so it scores 6 on features.

Intertek's directory records the RNG-CTRL-RVR40 only as a Recognized Component to CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 and UL 458, a part meant to go inside a listed product rather than a listing of the controller as sold, so it scores 4 on verification.

In r/SolarDIY an owner of a Rover 40A on two 100 W panels found charging stopped after heavy cloud and came back only when he reset the PV breaker, and a later reply reported the same fault on a Rover 20A (June 2026). In an r/SolarDIY thread weighing the Rover Li 40A against a Victron SmartSolar 100/50, an owner running two Rover 40s and a Rover Lite 60 called the install very easy, while most replies favored the Victron and one called Renogy cheap but well short of its quality (February 2026).

Footprint Hero, which bought the Rover 40A with its own money but links it through Amazon and Renogy's affiliate program, named it the budget pick of five MPPT controllers it tested, with 142 W peak from a 200 W array against 146 W from a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 and a 0.175 V average voltage error, fourth of five (February 2023). On DIY Solar Forum an owner running a Rover 40 and a Rover 100 for several years says both work well once the charge settings were found, though the Renogy BT app's history view is poor (August 2023).
