Certified For Chlorine, Banned In Thirteen States
Expert Score

The SF-7C is for someone whose complaint about their water is what chlorine does to skin and hair, not what is dissolved in it. Its strongest attribute is that the chlorine claim is certified rather than asserted: IAPMO R&T lists it to NSF/ANSI 177 at 96.6 percent reduction across the full 10,000-gallon cartridge life, and WaterChef is openly correct that 177 is the only NSF/ANSI performance standard that exists for shower filtration. Its weakest is scope, because chlorine reduction is the entire performance claim and nothing else is certified. The cartridge is also the shortest-lived in the range at roughly six months, so this is a two-cartridge-a-year product at around $32 each. The larger practical limitation is that the standard SF-7C cannot be sold in CA, CO, DC, HI, MA, ME, NJ, NV, NY, OR, RI, WA or VT, where the SF-7C-ECO is the only option. Buyers outside those states get the better spray at the same price.

PROS
  • Certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 177 at 96.6 percent chlorine reduction
  • 10,000-gallon cartridge holds that reduction across its full rated life
  • Catalytic carbon works at shower temperatures where plain carbon fades
  • Stainless steel hose with a PVC-free silicone liner rather than vinyl
  • Five-setting handheld wand included, no tools to install
  • Replacement RCSF-7 cartridges list at $31.95
CONS
  • Not for sale in CA, CO, DC, HI, MA, ME, NJ, NV, NY, OR, RI, WA or VT
  • Chlorine reduction is the only certified claim; nothing else is covered
  • Roughly six months per cartridge, the shortest interval in the range
  • Chrome and brushed nickel finishes cost $10 more than white
  • Warranty is three years, against lifetime on the drinking-water systems

The WaterChef SF-7C is a shower filter and handheld wand assembly built around a ThermalGuard catalytic carbon cartridge certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 177 for 96.6 percent chlorine reduction over 10,000 gallons, or roughly six months. The kit includes a five-setting wand and a stainless steel hose with a PVC-free silicone liner. Installation is tool-free onto a standard shower arm. WaterChef states the system is not sold in thirteen states with low-flow showerhead regulations.
