Usability
Nothing to buy, nothing to plug in, nothing going to drain. FutureSoft converts hardness so it cannot stick, and aggregated Reddit analysis puts it among the best-regarded salt-free conditioners on the market. The hard limit is water chemistry: iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide must all be zero, so this is a city water product. On a well, buy the salt-based softener instead, whatever the no-salt pitch suggests.
- No salt, no electricity, no drain line and no wastewater
- Media is not consumed, so running cost is effectively zero
- Handles hardness up to 81 GPG
- Among the best-regarded salt-free conditioners in aggregated Reddit analysis
- Adds no sodium to the water
- Simplest installation of any SpringWell tank system
- Lifetime warranty on tanks and valves
- Requires iron, manganese, copper, oil and hydrogen sulfide all at zero ppm, which rules out most well water
- Free chlorine must stay under 3 ppm
- Does not remove hardness; water will not feel soft the way ion exchange makes it
- No soap-lathering improvement, only scale prevention
- A water test is essential before buying
- No published NSF/ANSI certification listing
The SpringWell FS+ uses FutureSoft template assisted crystallization media to convert dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that pass through plumbing without adhering. It does not remove hardness, so the water is not soft in the ion exchange sense, but scale stops forming on fixtures, heating elements and appliances.
The practical appeal is that there is nothing to run: no salt, no electricity, no drain line, no regeneration and no wastewater. The media is not consumed the way resin is, so ongoing cost is effectively zero. Rated at 20 GPM for 7+ bathrooms in an upflow tank 13" wide by 54" (58" with head).
The limits matter and SpringWell publishes them plainly: hardness up to 81 GPG, but iron, manganese, copper, oil and hydrogen sulfide must all be at zero, with free chlorine under 3 ppm. That rules FutureSoft out for well water almost entirely.
