A Gallon More For Forty-One Dollars

The Royal is the Big Berkey with an extra gallon of storage and the same four-element ceiling, for forty-one dollars more. If your household empties the lower chamber before it refills - which is the usual reason people size up - that gallon is worth more than the price gap. If it does not, the Big Berkey does the same job in less vertical space.

PROS
  • One gallon more storage than the Big Berkey for a modest price step
  • Expandable from two to four elements, taking flow from 4 to about 7 gallons per hour
  • Runs on gravity alone with no electricity, plumbing or water pressure
  • 6,000 gallons per pair of elements, which is years of use for most households
  • AISI 304 stainless construction with no plastic in the water path except the spigot
  • Lifetime warranty on the stainless chambers and hardware when bought through the authorized dealer
CONS
  • No NSF certification for any filtration claim; all performance data is manufacturer-commissioned lab testing
  • Standalone Black Berkey replacement elements are out of stock industry-wide under an EPA stop-sale order
  • At 23 in. tall it will not fit under standard upper cabinets and is awkward to fill at a kitchen faucet
  • Caps at four elements, the same as the smaller Big Berkey, so extra capacity does not buy extra throughput headroom
  • The four-element configuration is currently listed out of stock
  • Priming the elements at a faucet defeats a lot of first-time owners

The Royal Berkey holds 3.25 gallons across two AISI 304 stainless chambers and filters entirely by gravity, with no electricity, plumbing or line pressure required.

It ships with two Black Berkey elements and accepts up to four. Two give up to 4 gallons per hour, four take it to roughly 7. Up to four PF-2 elements can be fitted below the Black Berkeys for fluoride and arsenic reduction.

At 23 in. tall and 9.5 in. across, the Royal is the point in the range where the system stops being a countertop appliance for most kitchens and starts wanting a dedicated stand or a spot beside the sink. It is generally sized for two to six people.

Five pools. The retailer figure is an authorized dealer's own review file rather than a big-box retailer's or the manufacturer's: BigBerkeyWaterFilters.com is a separate company from NMCL, with its own state of registration, owner, BBB record and warranty terms, and its per-product counts differ from every other Berkey dealer's, so it is a genuine pool but scored one band down for single-brand self-selection. The dealer's site-wide 4.9-from-10,588 badge is excluded as an aggregate. Home Depot's Berkey brand pages return no products and Lowe's carries no Berkey, so Amazon is the only large third-party pool.
