Usability

7.3 out of 10

EG4 rates it 12,000 W continuous from battery alone, the off-grid figure scored here rather than its 16,000 W rating with PV and grid, and that meets the 12,000 W top rung for a 48 V all-in-one, so it scores 10 on capacity.

EG4 rates its battery-to-load efficiency at 94 percent and publishes only a standby-mode idle consumption under 65 W, its draw while not inverting, so the efficiency is scored alone, capped at 6, and it scores 6 on efficiency.

Its 18,000 W one-second peak is 1.5 times its 12,000 W battery-only rating, the 24,000 W half-second peak being too short to count as surge, so it scores 3 on operating range.

It has three built-in MPPT controllers, a 10 ms transfer when configured against 20 ms by default, 120/240 V split phase from one unit, parallel operation, CAN and RS485 closed-loop battery communication and a Wi-Fi dongle in the box for the EG4 app, but EG4 publishes only a 250 A total battery charge current and no AC charger current, so it scores 9 on features.

Intertek's ETL directory lists the EG4 FlexBOSS21, by its model code IV-16000-HYB-AW-FX-xx, as Listed to UL 1741 and to CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 under EG4 Electronics LLC, and the California Energy Commission's inverter list carries it, so it scores 8 on verification.

EG4's FlexBOSS warranty gives 10 years of full parts or full product replacement with no proration, so it scores 8 on warranty and support.

Warranty and returns

EG4's warranty pages give its XP off-grid inverters 5 years, its hybrid inverters 10, the MPPT100-48HV 3 and its WallMount batteries 10 years or 10,000 cycles prorated, each void for products not bought from an EG4 approved vendor.

12 kW from battery alone

The IV-16000-HYB-AW-FX is EG4's FlexBOSS21, a 48 V split-phase hybrid inverter with three MPPT solar inputs that EG4 documents for running a home entirely off the grid as well as on it.

Verdict

It suits a buyer who wants 12 kW of 120/240 V power from batteries and up to 21 kW of solar on one outdoor-rated unit, and who will not need a generator input without adding the GridBOSS or a built-in screen.

  • Overheated in an off-grid test
  • Could not start a large air compressor
  • Unit replaced after it stopped seeing the battery

Engineer775, whose channel sells a competing inverter line, ran the FlexBOSS21 off grid in a real-world test that forum viewers said showed it overheating and failing to start his large air compressor (October 2025, about 9,700 views). Roll2 Videos showed its unit stop recognizing the battery, with zero ohms across the battery terminals, and replaced after a wiring fault on its own install that had gone unnoticed for 9 months (January 2026).
