This is the filter alone, for anyone who has already chosen a shower head and does not want to replace it, and at $119.99 it is the cheapest way into the range. Its strongest attribute is the hardware around the media: independent testing scored its design 7.80, the highest of the ten shower filters in that comparison, judged the housing sturdier than the other plastic bodies, and put maintenance at 9.75 on an ongoing cost of just over half a cent per gallon. Its weakest is what the same testing measured coming out of it — chlorine down 57 percent against a stated category expectation of 80 percent minimum, trihalomethanes down 73 percent but still above the strictest health guideline, hardness down barely one percent, and zinc rising to 3.7 ppm from the KDF media, above the laboratory's guideline. The filter also is not certified for chlorine reduction: Aquasana's own independent testing averages 91.61 percent over 22 tests, well above the measured figure. Pairing it with a head above about 2.5 GPM reduces performance further, and nothing on the unit says so. The trade is a well-built, cheap-to-run shower filter whose measured chlorine performance is well short of what its own category manages.
- Independently tested to NSF/ANSI Standard 177 and media certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61
- Highest design score of ten shower filters in independent testing, with the sturdiest housing in the group
- Ongoing cost of just over half a cent per gallon, scored 9.75 on maintenance
- Cheapest entry to the range at $119.99, and keeps the shower head already fitted
- Installs in minutes with no plumber and no tools
- Independent testing measured chlorine down 57%, against a stated category expectation of 80% minimum
- Not certified for chlorine reduction; the 90%-plus figure is Aquasana's own testing
- Hardness fell barely 1% in independent testing, and zinc rose above the laboratory's health guideline
- Performance degrades with shower heads above about 2.5 GPM, and nothing on the unit indicates it
- Chlorine only — no reduction claim for lead, PFAS or chloramines
- 10,000 gallons or six months, so two cartridges a year
This is the Aquasana shower filter supplied on its own, to fit between your shower arm and the shower head you already own. It is the cheapest way into the range and the right one if you like your current head.
The filter is independently tested to NSF/ANSI Standard 177 to reduce over 90% of chlorine for 10,000 gallons or up to six months. The media is a combination of coconut shell carbon and patented copper-zinc KDF, itself NSF/ANSI tested and certified to Standard 61, with an upflow design that keeps contact time high without dropping pressure.
It fits standard 1/2 inch shower connections and works with heads up to 4.5 inches across at around 2.5 GPM. Above that flow rate the contact time falls and filtration degrades. Installation takes minutes and needs no plumber.
