Usability
This is a conventional metered salt softener with a better-than-average controller, aimed at a household with genuine hardness rather than a taste complaint. Its strongest attribute is demand-initiated regeneration set from a phone, which is what separates an efficient softener from one that burns salt and water on a fixed clock. Its weakest is evidence: WaterChef publishes no NSF/ANSI 44 certification, no grain capacity per pound of salt and no hardness rating range, so the efficiency claims cannot be checked against a listing the way its point-of-use systems can. Both capacities are out of stock on WaterChef's own site at the time of writing, which makes the $1,578.95 list price academic for now. A softener also adds sodium and does nothing for chlorine, so most buyers will end up wanting the carbon filter alongside it. Judged on hardware it is competitive; judged on published evidence it is behind the certified competition.
- Regenerates on measured water use rather than a fixed timer
- Bluetooth app sets salt and water efficiency parameters directly
- 48,000 and 80,000 grain capacities cover most household sizes
- Seven-year valve and ten-year tank warranty, both made in the USA
- Seamless poly tank with non-corrosive components
- Both capacities are out of stock on WaterChef's own site at the time of writing
- No NSF/ANSI 44 certification published for the softener
- No salt efficiency figure, hardness range or service flow rating is published
- Adds sodium to the water and does nothing about chlorine or organics
- Needs a drain, a brine tank and enough space for both
- Listed at roughly 47 percent off a $2,995.99 compare-at price that does not appear to be charged
The TrueHome ECO-SMART Water Softener is a metered ion exchange softener sold in 48,000 and 80,000 grain capacities, sized by WaterChef against one to four and four to seven bathroom homes. The control valve regenerates on measured water use rather than on a timer and is configurable over Bluetooth for salt and water efficiency. The resin sits in a seamless poly tank and WaterChef claims soap use falls by up to 70 percent on softened water. Warranty is seven years on the valve and ten on the tank, both made in the USA.
