The SpringWell STR-1 removes tannins, the organic compounds that turn well water yellow or tea-coloured as groundwater passes through decaying vegetation. Tannins are not a health hazard but they stain laundry and fixtures and give water an unpleasant musty taste that ordinary carbon filtration does not fix. The STR uses a tannin-selective resin regenerated with salt, so it also softens.
The STR-1 is sized for one to three bathrooms with 30,000 grain capacity and 12 GPM service flow on a 1 inch connection. The STR-4 covers four to six bathrooms at 45,000 grain and 15 GPM. Both run at 25 to 60 psi, a narrower window than the rest of SpringWell's range.
A brine tank measuring 18 by 33 inches is included. Tannin removal is genuinely difficult water chemistry and results vary with the tannin load, which shows in this system's review scores.
