Whole-house RO is a last-resort technology and the price reflects it. You buy a Defender when a water analysis shows something that softening, oxidation and carbon cannot address, typically total dissolved solids in the thousands, brackish groundwater, nitrate or arsenic. Within that narrow brief it works, and the reduction table the company publishes covers a broader contaminant list than any other approach. What buyers underestimate is the supporting infrastructure. This is not a single appliance: it needs pre-treatment, atmospheric storage, a repressurisation pump and a drain capable of taking continuous reject flow, and it will discard a substantial fraction of everything it treats. The company's own public response to an unhappy owner noted that 4,000 ppm brackish water consumes membranes in two to three years, which is a fair warning and worth reading before committing. Get a full analysis, and get the sizing from them in writing.
