Catalytic carbon ahead of the resin removes the chlorine and chloramine that degrade softening resin, which is why a properly sequenced pair outlives a single hybrid tank. You get real hardness removal, so the softer-skin and brighter-laundry claims that the salt-free systems cannot make are legitimate here. It is also two tanks, a brine tank, a drain line and power, and the footprint is substantial. Certification remains component-level throughout; neither half carries a system performance mark. Buy it for the sequencing, not the certification.
