Priced within thirty cents of the salt-based combo, which makes the comparison unusually clean. Green Wave does not remove hardness; it changes its form so it stops depositing. If your objection to a softener is the salt handling, the wastewater or a septic system that cannot take brine discharge, this is the version to buy and it will protect your water heater and fixtures. If you want the felt effects of soft water, it will not deliver them, and the company is honest about that distinction elsewhere on its own site. Note also that salt-free conditioning performance degrades at very high hardness and in the presence of iron, neither of which is flagged prominently at the point of sale. Test first.
- No salt, no brine tank, no wastewater and no drain line on the conditioning stage
- Suitable where septic systems cannot accept brine discharge
- Catalytic carbon handles chloramine
- Protects water heaters and fixtures from scale
- Same price as the salt-based combo, so the choice is on merits not budget
- Does not reduce measured hardness, only prevents scale adhesion
- No softer skin, hair or laundry benefit
- Performance degrades at very high hardness and with iron present
- Component-level certification only
- Iron and hardness testing really should precede this purchase
The Bodyguard catalytic carbon filter paired with the Green Wave salt-free conditioner instead of an ion-exchange softener. Green Wave uses template-assisted crystallisation to convert hardness minerals into stable crystals that will not adhere to pipes or heating elements. No salt, no drain line on the conditioner, no wastewater.
