Cheap Water Heater Insurance, Not A Softener
Expert Score

The WH100SP is the least expensive way Express Water offers to keep scale off a water heater and fixtures, and for a household whose only hard-water complaint is appliance longevity that is a reasonable $160 to spend. Polyphosphate sequestration needs no salt, no drain, no power and no regeneration, which is why it fits in a single cartridge housing. Two things limit it. It is not a softener - hardness stays in the water, showers feel the same and soap behaves the same - and there is no sediment stage in front of the polyphosphate, so particulate loads the scale cartridge directly and shortens its life. Express Water publishes no grain capacity for the cartridge, so there is no way to size it against your own hardness reading, and the whole house range carries no NSF certification.

PROS
  • No salt, no drain line, no power and no regeneration cycle
  • Cheapest scale protection Express Water sells at $160
  • Full-size 4.5 x 20 in housing with 1 in ports and a pressure gauge
  • Sensible as targeted protection for a water heater or tankless boiler
  • Reusable stainless bracket allows mounted or free-standing installation
CONS
  • Not a softener - hardness remains in the water and washing feels unchanged
  • No sediment stage ahead of the polyphosphate, so particulate shortens cartridge life
  • No grain capacity published, so it cannot be sized against a hardness test
  • No NSF certification
  • One-year warranty
  • At $160 it is only $7 below the two-stage system that adds sediment and carbon

The WH100SP is a single-stage whole house unit carrying a polyphosphate crystal cartridge in a 4.5 x 20 in housing with 1 in connections, a pressure gauge and a release button on a stainless steel bracket. Polyphosphate sequesters calcium and magnesium so they do not deposit as scale; it does not remove hardness. Product dimensions are 7.2 x 8 x 28.8 in and the system operates between 45 and 80 PSI.

Social Scores

Social Score

Product-level where an independent pool exists, brand-level elsewhere. Express Water publishes its own rating widget on every product page; that is the manufacturer's own data and is not scored here.

Reddit Score5.0

Brand-level. r/WaterTreatment coverage of Express Water whole house systems is limited and mixed; one thread notes that filtration and softening are separate jobs and that water only tasted right with both in place, which is the distinction this product turns on.

Google Score6.0

Brand-level. Editorial coverage places Express Water's whole house line at the budget entry of the whole-house carbon segment and notes it lacks the certified whole-house carbon evidence its competitors carry.
