Clinic Maker, Traceable Clearance, Fragile In Owners' Hands

The Flex MD is made by Dermalux and sold in the US only by CurrentBody, and it is the most expensive device in this range at $2,312.99. Its clearance is the cleanest here: two 510(k)s, K202028 and K212275, name the Dermalux Flex MD, although CurrentBody's page calls it FDA-approved, which no consumer LED device is. Light Therapy Insiders, which received it free and earns commission through a discount code, measured 29 mW/cm2 with all three wavelengths on and 3 mW/cm2 of near-infrared alone, at a distance it does not state; Dermalux specifies about 1 inch. The canopy measures 11 by 31 inches, about 340 square inches, and each wavelength can be run alone, which the CurrentBody masks cannot do. Reddit owners are the counterweight: one reports three units failing in two years, others report dead lights and controllers inside the warranty, and several say the results did not justify the price. It is corded, sessions run up to 30 minutes lying down in goggles, and the warranty is two years.

PROS
  • Two 510(k)s, K202028 and K212275, name the Dermalux Flex MD
  • Independent spectrometer reading of 29 mW/cm2 with all three wavelengths on
  • Three published peaks, 415, 633 and 830 nm, each selectable alone
  • 11 x 31 in canopy, about 340 square inches
  • Base unit holds the canopy; hands-free
CONS
  • $2,312.99, against a $2,569.99 compare-at price
  • CurrentBody's page calls it FDA-approved; it is cleared, not approved
  • Near-infrared measured at 3 mW/cm2 on its own
  • Reddit owners report LEDs and controllers failing within months
  • Corded; sessions up to 30 minutes lying down in goggles
  • Sold only through CurrentBody, which handles the warranty

The Flex MD is made by Dermalux, the UK clinic-LED maker, and sold in the US by CurrentBody. It is a flexible 360-LED canopy on a base unit, at 415 nm blue, 633 nm red and 830 nm near-infrared, each selectable alone or combined, used about 1 inch from the skin for 1 to 30 minutes. It runs from the mains and comes with goggles and a treatment pillow.

CurrentBody sells the Flex MD in the US and handles its orders, returns and warranty; Dermalux, the UK maker, sells no other home device here. CurrentBody's Trustpilot profile for currentbody.us reads 4.4 from 7,523 reviews, 2,314 of them in the past twelve months, and the company invites customers to leave them. The recurring complaints there are devices that fail inside a year, slow customer service and costly returns, and SmartCustomer (formerly Sitejabber) rates the company 1.9 from 126. The Flex MD is not sold on Amazon US, and no retailer other than CurrentBody carries it with reviews.
