Ninety-Five Dollars Of Sand Protection, Nothing Else
Expert Score

Every well system with sand in it should have one of these ahead of the equipment, and at $95 this is the least consequential purchasing decision on the site. Its strongest attribute is that nothing is consumed, since the screen is flushed and reused indefinitely and, unlike a cartridge pre-filter, it has no running cost. Its weakest is resolution: 60 mesh is roughly 250 microns, which stops sand and rust flakes and passes silt, clay and everything finer. The buyer is not really trading anything away here, because this is a component rather than a treatment system, and the only mistake available is expecting it to do more. SoftPro publishes no flow rate or pressure drop figure, which for a screen filter matters mainly as it approaches clogging.

PROS
  • Reusable screen with nothing to buy again
  • Flushes through a valve without disassembly
  • Two plumbing sizes, 3/4 inch and 1 inch
  • Protects softener resin and carbon beds from abrasive sediment
  • Cheapest insurance in the SoftPro catalogue at $95
CONS
  • 60 mesh is roughly 250 microns and passes anything finer
  • Removes nothing dissolved, chemical or biological
  • Needs a drain or bucket position for flushing
  • SoftPro publishes no flow rate or pressure drop figure
  • Not a substitute for a cartridge sediment filter on silty water

The spin-down separator is a reusable 60 mesh screen filter in 3/4 inch and 1 inch plumbing sizes, fitted upstream of a softener or filter to catch sand, grit and rust. Water enters tangentially and spins, dropping heavier particles into the sump for flushing through a valve at the base. Nothing is consumed and nothing is replaced, since the screen is rinsed and reused.

Social Scores

Social Score

Brand-level. SoftPro's independent coverage is concentrated almost entirely on the Elite softener line, and nothing independent discusses this accessory. The scores below are brand-level and reduced for that reason. SoftPro also operates qualitywatertreatment.com and the Quality Water Treatment YouTube channel, and neither is counted as an independent source.

Reddit Score4.0

Brand-level. Three threads carry the pool: an r/Plumbing question about the Elite softener, an r/WaterTreatment post titled as a warning about SoftPro, and an r/Plumbing post describing a defective unit shedding media into household fixtures. Comment on the engineering is broadly positive; the recurring complaint is customer service after the sale. No thread discusses this product.

Google Score5.0

Brand-level. WaterFilterGuru bench-tested a SoftPro Elite on a 120 ppm private well in Milner, Colorado and measured better than 99 percent calcium and magnesium reduction. It notes in that review that the Elite ships with no sediment pre-filter, which is what this product exists to supply. No independent source reviews the separator itself.

YouTube Score5.0

Brand-level. WaterFilterGuru's SoftPro Elite install-and-test video has roughly 22,000 views and states it is not sponsored; its test rig used a 100 micron sand separator ahead of the softener. SoftPro's own Quality Water Treatment channel is excluded. No independent video covers this product.

User Review Score7.0

Brand-level. SoftPro sells factory-direct, so there is no retailer pool. Two third-party profiles exist and disagree: Trustpilot shows 4 out of 5 from 14 reviews for softprowatersystems.com, while the BBB shows 2.78 out of 5 from 9 customer reviews for Quality Water Treatment, Inc., the same operator. Neither entity is BBB accredited and both pools are small.
