Kind Water Systems WS-TAN Review
Expert Score

The WS-TAN is for a specific and frustrating well problem: water that is yellow or tea-coloured from dissolved organics, which sediment filters do not touch and carbon only partly helps. Its strongest attribute is that it does two jobs in one tank, running a tannin-selective anion resin alongside a salt-based cation softening resin, so colour and hardness are removed together rather than needing two vessels. It also carries the only real performance certification on any softening component Kind sells: the cation resin is listed to NSF/ANSI 44, the household softener standard, which nothing else in the range claims. The weakest attribute is flow. At 10 GPM this is the slowest whole-house system Kind makes apart from the WS-CIS, and hardness tolerance drops to 50 grains per gallon against 75 elsewhere, so a household that is both very hard and tannin-affected may be outside its envelope. Kind publishes no grain capacity or tannin loading figure, so correct sizing depends on a water test rather than the spec sheet. Both resins share one brine tank, meaning salt is consumed for tannin regeneration as well as softening, and running costs are correspondingly higher. The trade is flow rate and hardness headroom for the only system Kind offers that removes colour.

PROS
  • Removes tannin colour and hardness in a single tank rather than requiring two vessels
  • Cation softening resin certified to NSF/ANSI 44, the only such listing in Kind's range
  • Smart View Meter reporting live flow, usage and remaining capacity
  • Tannin-selective anion resin rather than relying on carbon to remove colour
  • Lifetime limited warranty plus a 120-day satisfaction guarantee
CONS
  • Flow drops to 10 GPM, the lowest of any Kind whole-house system except the WS-CIS
  • Hardness tolerance falls to 50 grains per gallon against 75 elsewhere in the range
  • No grain capacity or tannin loading figure published, so sizing depends entirely on a water test
  • Both resins regenerate from one brine tank, raising salt consumption
  • Requires a drain line, a brine tank and regeneration wastewater

The WS-TAN targets tannins, the dissolved organic compounds that turn well water yellow or tea-coloured and give it an earthy taste. It runs a tannin-selective anion exchange resin alongside a salt-based cation softening resin in a single 53 by 24 by 16 inch tank, so it removes colour and hardness in one pass. The softening resin is certified to NSF/ANSI 44 and 61, the only NSF/ANSI 44 listing anywhere in Kind's range. Flow is 10 GPM on 1 in NPT with hardness tolerance to 50 grains per gallon.

Social Scores

Social Score

Brand-level. Kind sells factory-direct and its own product pages carry only its in-house review widget, which is not treated as a pool here. No product-level pool exists for this model. The Amazon and retailer scores are blank for reasons given in each.

Reddit Score6.0

Brand-level. Discussion is thin but real, concentrated in r/WaterFilters and r/homeownerstips. Owners report straightforward DIY installation, a clear drop in chlorine taste and less scale on fixtures. The recurring complaint is price, and one long-running thread tracks Kind's discounting closely enough to conclude the advertised list price is almost never what a buyer pays.

Google Score7.0

Brand-level. Independent written coverage exists but is limited. The Gadgeteer published a hands-on review of the E-3000UV, and Kind turns up as a named comparison point in whole-house filter roundups. Most remaining search results are affiliate roundups rather than testing.

YouTube Score5.0

Brand-level. YouTube coverage of Kind is almost entirely about the wall-mounted E-series city systems. The WS well-water range has no independent video testing we could find, so this score reflects the brand and should be read as thin rather than as evidence about this product.
