SpringWell Whole House Cartridge System

The SpringWell CWH-1 is a wall-mounted, two-stage cartridge filter that plumbs directly into your home’s main water line. A 5-micron sediment cartridge catches sand, silt, and rust; a carbon block behind it reduces chlorine, chloramine, PFOA, PFAS, PFOS, herbicides, pesticides, and the taste and odor that come with municipal treatment.

Who this is for

Homes on city water that want whole-house filtration without dedicating a closet to it. At 24″ tall and 15.5″ wide, the CWH-1 mounts to a wall in a garage or utility room — a fraction of the footprint of a tank-based system. The 20 GPM flow rate is high enough that simultaneous showers and appliances won’t produce a noticeable pressure drop, which is the most common complaint about undersized whole-house filters.

Who should look elsewhere

This is not a well water system. It has no provision for iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, or bacteria, and SpringWell explicitly warns against using it where water is microbiologically unsafe. If you’re on a private well, their well water line is the correct product.

It also doesn’t soften water. The base CWH-1 is carbon and sediment only — if you have hard water and want scale reduction, you need the CWH-2, which adds a salt-free conditioning cartridge. If lead or VOCs are a concern, the CWH-3 adds a 0.5-micron cartridge for those.

The tradeoff worth understanding

Cartridge systems cost less upfront than tank-based filters and take up far less room. The tradeoff is ongoing maintenance: you replace cartridges annually at roughly $128.80 per year, where a tank system’s media typically lasts five years or more. Over a decade, that difference adds up — the cartridge system’s lower entry price is partly deferred cost rather than saved cost.

Whether that’s the right trade depends on your situation. If space is tight or you’d rather spend less now, the cartridge design makes sense. If you’re staying in the home long-term and have room for a tank, run the ten-year math before deciding.

Installation and warranty

The system ships with housings, cartridges, mounting bracket and hardware, spanner wrench, and O-rings with lubricant. You supply your own piping and fittings. It’s a reasonable DIY job if you’re comfortable cutting into your main line; if you’re not, budget for a plumber, since cost varies with where your main enters the house.
